Pingtung -- Gourmet and Recreation - Part II

Coffee Shop Street

Coffee Shop Street

Chrysmy Bakery

Chrysmy, a bakery that sells it's bread and desserts to every major hypermarket in Taiwan, has received international certifications and has enjoyed customers' high praise. Some areas of it's factory, located at an industrial park, are open for both tourists and the general public in order to provide a better understanding of the bread-making process. Also, bakers give on-site instructions to allow visitors to enjoy bread that they make themselves.

Pingtung Night Market

Bustling every evening, Pingtung Night Market is on a gourmet's must-visit lit. Every Taiwanese delicacy is available here, such as fried-Spanish mackerel thick soup, sticky rice dumplings, Taiwanese meatballs, assorted side dishes (known as "Heibaiqie", literally "sliced food the customers choose" ), just to name a few. Among the shops, many are century-old. Lots of customers wait for a long time in long lines only for a bite of the delicacies, but to them, such a wait is worthwhile. In addition, ice dishes like Pao-Pao ice with it's creamy texture and snowflake ice with a wide range of flavors are extremely popular and make people recall their childhood.

Coffee Shop Street (old military dependents' houses)

Shengli Village and Chongren Village at Qingdao Street used to be where the officers' residences were located during Japanese rule. Afterwards, they were utilized as military dependents' houses and are the most well preserved military dependents' villages in Pingtung. In an effort to rejuvenate these villages, many of their houses have been transformed into cafes or restaurants with the original structure of the Japanese-style houses preserved. Some of the houses still keep old-fashioned postboxes with a national flag of the ROC hung on the exterior of the buildings, fully revealing the authentic ambience of military dependents' villages. Custom enjoy their meal outdoors to feel the relaxing atmosphere of  "old houses with a new fashion." When night comes and the lights are on, they turn into a sleepless town and convey the one-of-a-kind atmosphere of military dependents' villages.
