Lanyu is situated 49 nautical miles south east of Taitung, with a surface area of approximately 45km; the entire length of the road encircling the island is roughly 37km. The island has a population of just over 3000 people, who reside in 6 tribes. The Tao(Yami) tribe living on the island refers to Lanyu as Ponso No Tauo(island of men).

Lanyu is the forgotten pearl on the Pacific; it has a beautiful geographical landscape, with rich and diverse ecological resources, and therefore is a paradise to get close to nature or observe local ecology. The Tao(Yami) tribe, who are skillful sailors and adventurers, still maintain the tradition of annual ceremonies; their production method of agriculture and fishery in equilibrium helps to sustain the resources on the island.

The Beauty of Ecology

Lanyu is situated in the overlapping region between the ecosystems of the continents of Europe and Asia, as well as the Philippine Islands. As a result, its ecology is precious and diverse. The surrounding ocean, due to the passage of Pacific Kuroshio, has endowed Lanyu with abundant marine resources.

The climate on Lanyu is warm and humid throughout the year, resembling that of a tropical forest. The forest is dense with diverse species of flora. Each tribe has its own forest, because the forest is the source of building material for canoes and houses. The Tao(Yami) tribe use natural nurturing techniques to sustain the plantation resources on the island.

The thick forest resembles a green treasure chest; Birdwing Butterflies dance amidst the canopy of the forest, while Helicostyla okadai Kuroda snails love to come out for a stroll after the rain. When dusk falls, the Indian Barringtonia bloom with full force, and the Lanyu Scops Owl will take over the silence of the evening sky.
