Maokong
The Origin of Maokong
Maokong is located in the southeast corner of Taipei City. It is framed by Erge Mountain Range. The name Maokong, which means "cat's hollows," has nothing to do with an actual cat. The boulders and stones in the stream bed here are made of rock of varying hardness, and over time the stream's waters have carved potholes in them. The original name given to this place by local inhabitants was pronounced "niao kang" in their native Taiwanese dialect, and over time this became the Mandarin "maokong" used today, reference to the "cat's hollows" in the stream's rocks.
With the majority of the local populace engaged in the cultivation of tea, in 1980 Taipei City Government formally classified the district as a tourist tea plantaion area. Ever since, Taipei's residents have flocked here for tea drinking, hiking, and taking in the lovely sights and natural scenery.
Maokong's Ecology
This is an area of bountiful flora and fauna variation, with over 50 bird species to be observed, over 25% of the island's butterfly species resident, protected species including the Taipei green tree frog and serpent eagle, and the renowned Apricot Tree Garden, among many other attractions.
