Hengchun City Walls

Hengchun was formerly known as Langqiao. During the reign of Qing Dynasty Emperor Guangxu, the authorities used bricks and cement to build a wall city and four gates. Of the four gates, the South Gate is the best preserved and is listed as a national monument.

Hengchun Qianggu Festival

This event has a long history and dates from when rich people would open the gate during the Zhongyuan Festival to give alms to the poor. However, this generosity always caused casualties as people fought over the donations Because of this, the "gupend" was designed and erected for the "qianggu" activity, during which people had to climb to the top of the "gupeng"and compete for alms. This "qianggu"has now become one of the most famous aspects of life in Hengchun.

Shimen Historical Battlefield

Locate in Checheng Township, Shimen Historical Battlefield is where the Mudan Incident occurred. A stele built to commemorate the event is known as "Cheng Qing Hai Yu, Huan Wo He Shan" meaning "Clarify the Sea, Recover the Lost Territory."

Stone-Slab Architecture

The stone-slab houses in Mudan Township were constructed using slate and shale are represent the original style of aboriginal homes. The Paiwan tribe's stone-slab houses are the most characteristic.

Sisal Industry Historical Exhibition

The Sisal Industry Historical Exhibition is located in an abandoned sisal factory in Hengchun's Longshui Village. In the past, sisal was an important local cash crop.

Shrike Ecological Exhibition Hall

Brown shrikes migrate through the Hengchun Peninsula every year. To promote ecological conservation, Pingtung County Government founded Taiwan's first shrike ecological exhibition center. In addition, Fangshan Township Office is supporting Fonggang villagers who produce and sell shrike-related handicrafts.

Alangyi Old Trail

Alangyi is the old name of Anshuo Village in Taitung County. Originally 203km long, this trail is part of the Southern Taiwan National Trail System. The forests and natural coastal vegetation along the trail are well preserved, and several endangered animal and plant species are also found in the area. The area's special ecosystems are the focus of conservation efforts.

Hengchun Qianggu Festival

Take Taiwan Highway 1 south to Taiwan Highway 26, then continue straight along County Highway 200 to Hengchun's East Gate.

Shimen Historical Battlefield

Take Taiwan Highway 1 south to Taiwan Highway 26, and turn left at County Highway 199.

Stone-Slab Architecture

Take Taiwan Highway 1 south to Taiwan Highway 26, then turn left at County Highway 199. When you see a sign for the stone-slab heritage house, take Township Road 172, near Mudan Reservoir.

Sisal Industry Historical Exhibition

Take Taiwan Highway 1 south to Taiwan Highway 26(past the 29km marker) then turn right at Nanwan Rd, and right again at Township Road 153(Nanguang Rd).

Shrike Ecological Exhibition Hall

Take Taiwan Highway 1 south to Taiwan Highway 26 (past the 2.5km marker) and go straight to Guangfu Rd.

Alangyi Old Trail

Take Taiwan Highway 1 south, turn left at Taiwan Highway 9, turn right and then follow County Highway 199. When you reach County Highway 199-Jia turn left, and you will arrive at the trailhead at the intersection of County Highway 199-Jia and Taiwan Highway 26.
