Fongyi Glories -- A Journey through 200 Years of Fongshan History
Fongshan District, located at southwest of Kaohsiung, is one of the most populous administrative districts in Kaohsiung, with well-developed industries and convenient living facilities. Since its founding more than 200 years age, traces of this community's rich history and culture are retained in the historical buildings, small alleys and markets that continue to brew new energies. At Fongshan's busy street markets, people can get most of their shopping for daily essentials done. For special holidays, weddings, festivals, and life ritual goods, Fongshan is the place to go for people living ins the surrounding communities. From Sanmin Street, a street for furniture and religious objects, to Datie Street, a blacksmith street quietly selling iron farm tools, to places of worship, such as Tiangong Temple, Chenghuang (City God) Temple, Shuangcih Pavilion, Longshan Buddhist Temple, etc, the traditional lifestyle and culture of over several hundred years are still found in this community.
Over the course of its history, Fongshan was once the most prosperous county capital south of Tainan. It is also the most important historic city in Southern Taiwan. Fongyi Academy represents the pursuit of scholarship and culture during that period. The fort ruins reveal the strategic defense, political and economic position that Fongshan once held. The Caogong Canal irrigation system throughout the county built the foundation for Fongshan's wealth and prosperity.
