Gaomei Wetlands

Located in Qingshui, just south of the Dajia River mouth, the 1,500-hectare Gaomei Wetlands boasts abundant natural resources as well as one of a few Taiwanese Anatidae acquatic bird  breeding areas. It is a major ecological preservation zone inhabited by 120-odd bird species.

Dajia Jenn Lann Temple

Dajia Jenn Lann Temple, one of the most famous Mazu temples in Taiwan, was completed more than two centuries ago. It is a landmark in the Dajia area with it's annual "pilgrimage" drawing international attention and visitors in the third lunar month. After viewing the temple's main features, including the Violet Jade Mazu statue and Golden Mazu statue in the basement museum, one can also stop by the Jianggong Rd. Night Market for some butter pastries and other local snacks.

Dajia Old Street

Dajia Old Street, situated near Shuntain Rd. in Dajia District, is mostly lined with well-preserved two-story buildings erected long ago in an elegant, yet nostalgic, architectural style. The Wenchang Temple in this area has been declared a 3rd-class National Historic Site. Next time you stop by Dajia, don't forget to take a fun journey back in time by visiting this historic street and Wenchang Temple!

Jhenxiao Monument in Remembrance of Lin

The Jhenxiao Monument in Remembrance of Lin is a 4-column, 3-window structure with a gate flanked by a pair of stone lions and facade adorned with an Imperial Inscription. Completed in 1848 during the reign of the Qing Dynasty's Emperor Daoguang, over 100 years ago, the monument was meant to honor Lin Chun-niang, a Dajia resident who did not remarry after being widowed, and instead devoted herself to her mother-in-law's well-being. As the Chaste, modest and filial Lin is an ideal embodiment of Chinese virtues, her Jhenxiao Monument was declared a 3rd-class National Historic Site.

Waipu Ranch of Taiwan Provincial Farmers' Association

Operated by the Taiwan Provincial Farmers' Association, the Waipu Ranch is one of a few Taiwanese facilities to offer diverse, fun-filled opportunities to interact with animals, rather than observing them from a distance in a zoo-like setting. The Tianma Ranch also recently relocated the Waipu Ranch premises, adding more buzz to this increasingly enjoyable life-education facility that allows visitors to touch the adorable, eye-catching animals, including alpacas and llamas.

Wenchang Temple in Dajia

The Wenchang Temple on Wenwu Rd. in Dajia District was declared a 3rd-class National Historic Site for it's well-preserved architecture and craftsmanship. Initially a public school and Dajia's first-ever educational facility, the temple sparked enthusiasm for academic pursuits in the neighborhood. During the exam season, crowds of test-takers and their parents bring offerings to the temple in prayer for good test results. In recent year, local dignitaries have joined forces in organizing various arts and cultural events to keep this grassroots heritage alive while increasing their bonding time with the neighborhood.

Shalu Cinema Art Center

Seven decades ago, the first post-World War II movie theater in Taichung's coastal area was opened in Shalu, giving it the iconic status of "cinema town". In an effort to keep the good old days alive, the Shalu Cinema Art Center was opened in 2004 as a treasure trove of movie posters and 1,000-odd cinematography publications. On a free-of-charge basis, visitors can enjoy indie movies (including 35-mm films!) that provide a contrast to their Hollywood counterparts at this art center, which quietly creates a vision for the Formosan film industry.
